Roderick & Frances Stocking's Tombstone

My great-grandparents, Roderick Remine and Frances “Fanny” Hitchcock Stocking are buried here, in the Osborne Township Cemetery near Mayfield, Sumner County, Kansas. This cemetery lies on the Chisholm Cattle Drive Trail.

Roderick and Frances came to Kansas from Michigan in the 1870′s, homesteaded just north and west of this cemetery, in a one-room house so small they had to put the table out of the house at night to put down their beds.

Their first child, my grandfather, Elmer Stocking, was born in that tiny house! Fortunately, they built a bigger house before they had three more sons, Ralph Hurlburt, Roderick Porter, and John Lester.

My great-grandmother passed away from cancer in 1920, but my great-grandfather Roderick lived to be nearly 98 years old, passing away in 1951. I remember him as being tall and distinguished looking.

My mother, his granddaughter-in-law, says he was a “fine, gentle, man” and she always thinks of him when she thinks of this verse, “Prayer was his key for the morning and his lock for the night”.

  • Cline Hagerman:

    Hi,
My mother’s maiden name was Stocking. Her great grandfather’s name was Roderick Stocking and his father’s name was Francis Stocking. Francis Stocking married Colista Pratt in Pratt’s Hollow, NY. Roderick first moved just north of Peoria, Ill, where he is buried. My grandmother, Lillian Beebe married Milo Stocking in Tecumshi, MI. Milo was the son of Francis. My grandmother’s first cousin was Suzie Cline. She named her youngest son, Cline, and I was named after him. What area of Michigan did your Michigan Stockings come from?

    Sincerely, Cline

    • Hi Cline! I’m sorry to be so slow getting back with you!

Spring colds are miserable, and I’ve had one! My my Grandfather was Elmer Stocking, his father was Roderick Stocking, his father was John Hurlburt Stocking, and John’s parents were Roderick and Electa Post Stocking, then Roderick’s parents were John and Deborah Hurlburt Stocking, then Elijah and Hannah Shepherd, then Samuel and Abiah Boardman, then George and Elizabeth, and then Deacon Samuel and Abiah Boardman, then the original, George and Anna.

I do not have my Stocking book where I am right now, but will look up your lines when I can put my hands on it! What I’ve just given you should allow you to find our common ancestor. If we are not related, then you will be the first Stocking descendant that I’ve met that I’m not related to!

I do appreciate you stopping in to say “hello!” very much. My Great-grandfather Roderick came from Butler, Michigan, and his father came from Madison County, NY.
Did you ever get to go to the national Stocking reunion? My mom did, but I’ve not had that opportunity, and they’ve not had one for awhile.

      Take Care!

  • Hi there, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam feedback? If so how do you stop it, any plugin or anything you can suggest? I get so much lately it’s driving me crazy so any help is very much appreciated.

    • Yes, I do use something that helps with spam, and it is called Akismet. I hope that helps you! Akismet puts the spam into a different category where you can approve or delete it easily. Some slips through, though.
